Reasons to Fish This Winter. Because…

So, maybe you need a little incentive to get on the water this winter. You may have some snow on the ground, or it may be raining, but that’s no excuse not to be on the water. The fish are there. They eat. And what else are you going to do? Ski? Check out the following Continue reading

Winter Arrives In Montana—a visual

I used to publish a magazine called Tight Lines, and prior to that I put together a publication called Fly Line. These were great projects that were super beneficial to the angler, each article containing a ton of information on a particular fishery, most of it garnered from the stream’s chief biologist and area guides. They are outdated now, but if you can get your hands on one or more of the old copies, you’ll still find information very pertinent to those existing fisheries. Anyway…

Part of the equation was a prediction for the amount of snowfall Continue reading

Biologists to Destroy Lake Trout Eggs in Yellowstone

Sounds like the National Park Service may finally have a solution for controlling non-native lake trout numbers in Yellowstone Lake while boosting sagging populations of native cutts. That would be awesome because Yellowstone Lake used to be one of the best cutthroat fisheries on the planet. Then, in the 1990s, whirling disease in the lake’s tributaries, coupled with heavy predation by those lake trout, made Continue reading

Kamchatka, Russia Reopens for Anglers

You like wild? Really, really wild? And you like some big rainbows and dollies thrown into the mix? Salmon, too? If so, you better make some excuses for the spouse, or build up a shore pass some other way, because this summer you once again have an opportunity to fish the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.

Really? Thought it was closed?Well, that was then and Continue reading

Wrap-up from Denver ISE Show

Thanks to all who attended the International Sportsman’s Exhibition in Denver last week. I had a blast flipping through all those images and sharing those stories with you. And thanks to those who came up afterward and introduced yourselves. Great to get to know a few of you who follow Tonic. And thanks, always, to John Kirk, who promotes Continue reading

Images of the Year 2011

Each December, as the year wanes, I like to go through photos from the past 12 months and select my favorites to share with you. Most years they are dominated by fishing shots, but 2011 was a strange and busy year in which I moved with my girls from Ennis to Missoula. In addition, I took on new duties as the editor of Fly Rod & Reel Magazine, and I just, basically, tried to hold it all together. In other words, I didn’t fish as often as I’m used to. That’s not good, but that lack of fishing makes it pretty easy when trying to select a new years resolution—in 2012 I’m fishing more often.

Ok, here are some shots from 2011. Happy new year. Hope you enjoy. Continue reading

Winter Issue Fly Rod & Reel now available

Just wrapped up Fly Rod & Reel’s winter issue and it should be hitting the newsstand any day. I took over the helm in May and I think this is the best issue I’ve produced. That’s been the trend, in my mind, and as long as I keep that up you’re going to see a magazine that appeals to the eye and the mind. Mainly, what I’m trying to do, is give all of you something fresh and new in each issue, trying to make you say, “Wow, I haven’t read that before” or “Whoa, that’s a cool approach to an old subject.”

You’ll have to check out the mag on your own to know all that’s in it, but here’s a little tease: Continue reading

Winter Driving. Get to those fish risking life and limb.

You go fishing or hunting during the late season when the snow flies and you best be ready to attack the roads, because they’ll be trying to eat you.

I’m not as gung-ho on the icy road driving as I used to be, but I still end up out there on occasion stomping on the pedal trying to attain a few more yards, to reach that perfect run on on the Ruby, or that trailhead to a golden trout lake in the Wind Rivers, or to throw on some Vancouver Island steelhead stream where there just has to be a 20-pounder. Continue reading

You may already know that Bugslinger makes some killer t-shirts and gear, including the wicked belt I’m wearing right now, but you may not know that Slinger hooked up with Buff, which makes UV face and hand protection for anglers, and produced an award winning design.

Fact is, all of Slingers Buff designs are awesome. You can Continue reading

Chasing Mr. Big. A British Columbia Mule Deer Hunt

Just got back from, as it’s provincial license plate states, beautiful British Columbia. I left Missoula on the 2nd and returned on the 8th, the time between spent cruising the icy logging roads and climbing insanely steep ridges.

The area was billed Continue reading
