Igloo’s Yukon Cooler. Better than Yeti?

I know Yeti coolers are all the rage in fishing and hunting, and that Yeti spends an advertising budget rivaling Apple’s promoting their merits, but I wanted you to know there are other options for keeping your food fresh and your cold ones icy for extended periods of time, meaning from a week up to 14 days.

In July, I visited the Igloo booth at the ICAST/IFTD show in Las Vegas and talked to their representatives about cooler design and functionability. And what I learned is that Igloo’s Yukon Cold Lockers line is the equal of Yeti, if not technically more sound. And how did I come to that conclusion? Igloo had sliced their coolers and Yeti’s in half to show true insulation and volume capacity. But they weren’t in the slamming Yeti mode. Instead, they promoted the advances they’ve made in cooler design and let the product speak for itself. Advances? How about a five-year warranty to show they stand behind their work. And how about stronger hinges that click back so the cooler lid won’t fall on your fingers. How about a high-strength lockable lid, making it “critter resistant” while keeping it off-limits to brew mugglers. More? Sure. How about an oversized tethered drain plug for quick draining; food-grade dry-ice compatibility; industrial-strngth freezer gasket, and a cool riser technology, which keeps the bottom of the cooler off hot surfaces and allows ventilation from below. In addition the handles on either side of the cooler are large enough to allow using two hands to carry it. One more thing. This cooler offers reversible  skid/anti skid feet, which lets you either keep the cooler in place in a pickup bed or allow it to slide for easy access.

So, is it the best cooler ever? I don’t know because the real test is about to come. I just got the Yukon 70 today and I’m taking it on the road this weekend for it’s first in-the-field test. This will be fun. Elk burger. Eggs. Bacon. NY steaks. And about 64 Rain-dogs. Will she keep them icy cold with two bags of block ice? We’ll find out. And I’ll give you the results next week.
