OWAA Hires Schoonen to Communications Post

A little local love to throw out here. OWAA is a great organization and a solid place for people getting into outdoors writing to meet brethren and gain valuable contacts. Whether you live in Missoula or elsewhere, and you want to write outdoors pieces, or sell outdoors photography, get in touch with these people.

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Outdoor Writers Association of America announces the hiring of Jennifer Schoonen as the organization’s publications editor.

Over the past 20 years, Schoonen has worked in a variety of development and communications roles in the conservation arena. She last worked for 11 years at the National Forest Foundation, a nonprofit partner of the U.S. Forest Service, most recently serving as vice president for development and communications. In her new role, Schoonen will oversee the production of OWAA’s magazine, Outdoors Unlimited, as former editor Ashley Schroeder transitions to a new position with OWAA as communications manager.

“I am excited about having Jennifer as part of the talented team here at OWAA,” said Executive Director Tom Sadler. “With Jennifer’s experience and talents, we will continue to grow OWAA’s communications expertise and service to our members.”

“Working with Jennifer these past few days confirms my confidence in her ability to do an excellent job in taking over as editor of Outdoors Unlimited,” Schroeder said.

Prior to working for the NFF, Schoonen spent nearly 10 years at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, working in various communications, conservation education and fundraising positions. With an early goal to write about conservation and the outdoors, she earned her master’s degree in journalism with an emphasis in natural resource management from the University of Arizona. Schoonen is an avid outdoors enthusiast, and enjoys hiking, camping and fishing with her husband and two daughters.

“With my strong interest in using my communications skills to educate and inspire others to enjoy the great outdoors, I can’t think of a better place for me to land professionally than at OWAA,” Schoonen said. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to join this great organization and look forward to meeting and working with the OWAA membership.”
