Confluence Films’ Waypoints Debuts November 8

Nobody would tell you that Jim Klug doesn’t throw a good party.

I’ve been involved in enough of those frays to say, firsthand, that hanging with that boy, the producer at Confluence Films,  can be a lot of fun. There’s never a lack of beverage onhand, nor interesting party guests to commiserate with, and whether he’s celebrating Christmas, a birthday, a friend’s marriage, a friend’s divorce, the release of a new film, or a Friday, Saturday or even a Wednesday night (no glass half-empty attitude with this guy), you’ll have fun in that mix.

That’s why I’m pretty excited to to hit Bozeman tomorrow for the release of Klug’s newest film, Waypoints, which details fly-fishing adventures in Chile, Venezuela, the Seychelles, India and Alaska. I know I’ll be jealous of the traveling and fishing that Klug gets to do, and I’ll likely have to tell him to shut the hell up when he goes on about if for too long, but on the other hand I expect some free beer at the pre-party and that can be the start of a lucrative compensation package he owes me for not being included in the film.

Perhaps it was all my fault from the start, as I did have opportunities to be in the film and flatly refused, not because I wouldn’t have enjoyed it, but because life got in the way—I hear ye’ but you tell two little girls that daddy’s leaving for a month and see how you fair when they start batting those wistful eyes.

Enough on that. The limited-invite pre-party will be a blast, I’m sure, and it’s going to be awesome to see the film’s debut in the Ellen Theater, all with a pack of fish-head friends along for the ride. Here’s the great deal for you—it’s a good bet the film is debuting near you tomorrow night, too. In fact, in typical Klug form, he’s orchestrated said debut to coincide tomorrow night, November 8, across the country and wherever else he jammed his marketing tendrils. This includes 50 or more venues, many centered around fly-fishing bastions, such as Boulder, Juneau, Missoula, Bend, Jackson, Portland, and Seattle.
So, should you be looking forward to this, for more than purely social reasons? I think so. Here’s why.

Just the other day I got an early release copy of the film and have been checking it out when time allows. Seeing the film on my flatscreen is no substitute for seeing it on the big screen, but it gives me enough of an idea to say, Waypoints is definitely worth seeing. Take the scenes from St. Brandon’s Atoll, which is located in the Indian Ocean. If you want to do some dreaming this is the scene to see—big bones, giant trevally, bluefin trevally, Indo-Pacific permit and lots of lesser-known species all make an appearance, tussling with lucky anglers who cast over sand flats and some of the most beautiful turquoise blue waters you’ll ever see. You’re going to wonder if you’ll ever have the chance to throw there and the answer may not be what you want to hear.

You’re not going to feel much better after watching a segment on southeast Alaska steelhead, where a couple dudes get to yard them out at a steady clip, then toil in southeast’s other delights, such as feasting on Dungeness crab and shrimp, or just blowing up icebergs with a magnum pistol so that they can drop 10,000-year old cubes into their evening cocktails.

I’m not going to go further with this. I want you to see this premiere tomorrow without knowing all that’s going to happen. I want you to be stunned and amazed and I think you will be. My only warning: if you’re the jealous type, you’ll feel a little pain watching all these people who aren’t you, having all the fun. Here are some of the details.
