Fly Fishing Presentation at International Sportsman’s Exhibition, Denver

Wanted all of you to know that I’ll be headed to Denver shortly to speak at the International Sportsman’s Exhibition. This is a show that I attended when I was young. It was something that my mother, father, sister and I did as a family. We listened to the presentations and wandered through the booths, dreaming of trips to various places for fishing and hunting and general outdoors activities.

The show was in Seattle in those days, but now I head to Denver to Continue reading

Five-Minute Respite: Fly Fishing Permit in the Florida Keys

Can’t really ignore this short clip. I have to think that every one of us would like to catch a permit. Many of us have tried, fewer have succeeded. Some of us haven’t even had the chance. So where’s the closest place to test your skills? The Florida Keys. That’s where this action takes place. Enjoy the respite.

Video: Giant Trevally in the Seychelles

Alright, this won some awards I hear, but it’s not the greatest video I’ve ever seen. Makes you really interested in watching it, right? Well, the thing is, despite no solid lighting on faces and such it’s still worth seeing. This is the perfect five minute interlude from work. Giant trevally. Seychelles. Dreams. What’s not to like. Here you go.

Shark Fishing From the Goodyear Blimp

This is some crazy stuff here boys. Catching sharks from the Goodyear blimp. Check it out. There’s not much to say about it. A sport that really never caught on, I guess.

Snowboarding in Montreal

I checked this out last night and I am seriously thinking about getting my bindings fixed, buying a helmet, and heading down to Lost Trail Pass to shred. I haven’t boarded in, like, three or four years, but I used to be ok. My legs are strong now because I’ve been riding a bike like mad so I should be good to go. Check this out and I think you might be tossing in the board Continue reading

Gill Net Restrictions on Lower Columbia Could Enhance All Inland Steelhead Fisheries

Cross your fingers on this one boys. If Washington approves changes in the lower Columbia gill net fisheries, many more steelhead will be allowed to swim upstream and enter a variety of famous waters, including the Deschutes, Klickitat, Grand Ronde, Imnaha, Snake, Clearwater, and Salmon Rivers. Fewer wild fish, likely, would succumb to the nets, too. Good for all things steelhead. Keep an eye on this one:

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will consider adopting broad-based changes Continue reading

Washington’s White Salmon River Opens for Steelhead

This may be something you would want to do, especially if you live in Portland or The Dalles, or Hood River or even Yakima or Ellensburg. As long as you don’t have to drive too far to reach Washington’s White Salmon River I think it would be cool to catch a steelhead on a river where a dam was recently removed. Check it out:

After a yearlong closure, anglers, beginning Saturday, will again be able to stalk southwest Washington’s lower White Salmon River in hope of hooking Continue reading

Art In-House

I love being home for the holidays and this year I was able visit Seattle and stay at my parents’ house. Always on the lookout there for all sorts of interesting items. Wandered a little with the camera and found these things. The chipmunk painting is my dad’s, Fred Thomas. I don’t know where he came up with the opossum. The dried rat is probably from our apple trees. The painting with Santa hanging off of it is Fred’s and probably depicts Fredrick Sound in southeast Alaska. The cat and Continue reading

OWAA Scholarships Available

Just before Christmas I spent an evening with the folks at the Outdoor Writer’s Association of America and really, really enjoyed the conversation. This is a group that has helped and promoted outdoor writers since before the time I decided to be a journalist with a focus on the outdoor sports. I thought any of you with similar asperations might take advantage of a great offer from this group and apply for one of their scholarships. This would be a good Continue reading
