Image of the Week: Geoff Moore’s 26-inches of Awesomeness

Ok, I get to post a bunch of my grip and grin images on the site, and I did so just a week or so ago when I placed an image of an insanely big rainbow trout, hoisted by yours truly, on the Angler’s Tonic homepage.

I caught that fish on some private lakes in eastern Washington that are large enough to allow you to think the fish have a chance. It was fun fishing but in the back of my Continue reading

For Sale: Loomis NRX 13′ 8/9-weight 4-piece Spey Rod

I just posted this rod on Craigslist, but I thought I would give all of you a quick heads-up, too. I’ve thrown this lightly so it’s almost brand new. I’ve got some more rods coming to test so I have to make room. This is a great stick for steelhead and
salmon on all the Pacific Northwest waters. Going to the Dean? Headed to Alaska West? Fishing the Clack or Deschutes with Hickman? Going full on adventure to Haida Gwaii? This rod will take care of you know matter where you show up to throw Intruders and Pick-yer-Pockets. PRICE: $650 plus shipping, which beats what I could find on eBay by $400-plus. Open the post for more pics. Continue reading

Being A Steelhead Junkie Just Got Easier

Being a steelhead junkie isn’t the easiest thing in the world—between tides, weather, river conditions, and the fickle nature of the fish itself, catching a steelhead often feels like a minor miracle.

Just getting to steelhead country, with the epicenter being British Columbia, Canada, can be a struggle, too. Say you want to fish Haida Gwaii. Or you’ve got a dream trip to Continue reading

The Orvis Helios 2 Fly Rod and Monster Trout

Got this Orvis Helios 2 a while back and have wanted to really put it to the test. That test arrived in eastern Washington a couple weeks ago when I fished private lakes for some monster rainbow trout, fish stretching 30 inches long and weighing seven to Continue reading

Fly Rod & Reel’s Angling Adventures 2013

Just got this one sent to the printer and I love the content that’s in it. If this magazine doesn’t make you dream of place to go and when to do it, check for a pulse. This should be hitting the newsstands in the next few days so keep your eyes open for it. Inside you’ll find pieces on fishing giant char with Spey rods in Nunavut, Canada, floating Oregon’s Owyhee River for smallmouth bass, trying to catch world-record tarpon at Homasassa, Florida, throwing down on mountain whitefish in the Rockies (and how to smoke them), floating underfished rivers in a Watermaster, and fishing in Alaska—by raft, by air, and with a couple of kids in tow. Along with that you Continue reading

The West’s Best Summer Fly-Fishing Hatches

The weather turned here in Missoula, which means it was snowing like crazy, pretty much blizzard conditions, a few days ago, and today it’s in the 60’s and it might make 70 tomorrow. I’m sure we’ll have more rainy and possibly snowy days to come, but this gets me all jacked up about summer in the West and the hatches that come with it.

Was thinking about which ones I have to hit and this is the short list. I want to know Continue reading

Back To The Wall Ranch 2013

Just got back from a weekend throwing for hogs. I’ve fished these two lakes, which are located on Back To The Wall Ranch in eastern Washington, for three straight years, always in late April. This year was a memorable affair as the fish are absolutely giant and they were on the leeches and chironomids both days. For just more than a couple hundred bucks you could have fished these lakes, too. As much as I don’t like to pay to play, these aren’t Continue reading
